Where does the waste in your skip bin go?

Have you ever watched your rubbish bin or skip bin get picked up and wondered where the contents would go? As the truck pulls away with your waste, that is just the start of the journey for your discarded rubbish.

When hiring a skip bin through Matt’s Skip Bins, you can have peace of mind knowing your waste doesn’t go to landfills. In fact, most of the time, your waste doesn’t all go to the same place at all.

The first place your skip bin goes is our sorting facilities, where we separate the waste and recycle whatever we can. After being sorted and categorised, we direct the waste type accordingly.

green waste

Green waste

All the materials accepted in a green waste skip bin are organic. Accepting flower trimmings, grass cutting, leaves, tree branches and small stumps, the materials that end up in this waste type are biodegradable.

As they are biodegradable materials, your green waste can avoid landfill. Once sorted through, we send it to specialised facilities where it will be broken down and reused for future environmentally friendly purposes. This can be later used for compost or other garden needs.

dirt and clay

Dirt & clay

Many excavating and landscaping jobs result in a large volume of waste in the form of dirt and clay. Like green waste skip bins, dirt and clay is a waste type that can be mostly reused.

With every dirt and clay bin that comes in, we screen and reuse as much as possible. The reusable content goes to recycling facilities where it can be returned to construction, landscaping and ground-working industries to limit the dirt and clay presence in landfills.

Construction materials

construction materials

Regarding construction waste, our mixed building waste is the main skip bin used. We accept a wide range of objects and materials, and it is usually filled with a mix of items, including some recyclables such as glass, bricks, concrete and dirt.

We know there are plenty of recyclable materials generally found on construction sites. Common construction waste such as bricks, concrete, tiles, timber and metals can be reused for future construction purposes. This means we must meticulously go through the content to separate the materials and give further purpose by sending items to recycling facilities where possible. Unfortunately, what cannot be reused needs to be sent to a landfill.

general waste

General waste

Similar to the mixed building waste bins, our general waste bins are usually filled with various items and materials. Generally used for household clean-ups, these bins can carry multiple things, including furniture, clothes, appliances, plastic, toys and more. We see looking through general waste as a treasure trove as you never know what you are going to find.

Our team goes through each bin, saving what we can to be recycled and reused. Textiles, electrical supplies and more can be salvaged and sent to the correct facilities to reuse parts and materials to serve as brand new. The items that cannot be given different purposes will be sent to a landfill.

Overall, our goal is to eliminate the waste sent to landfills to help preserve the environment. That is why our dedicated sorting facility is the first place your waste goes. We go through all skip bins, ensuring no items are overseen. What we can save will be spared and directed to the right recycling facilities to be given new life.

At Matt’s Skip Bins, we provide peace-of-mind skip bin hire solutions. With our skip bins spread across Sydney, we make it our mission to make an ethical and conscious commitment by doing our bit for the environment. That’s how you know your waste is in safe hands with our team.
